Important information about the home oxygen machine

What is a Home Oxygen Machine?

A home oxygen machine is a medical device that is mostly used for patients receiving intensive care treatment or for patients who have problems with chest and respiratory diseases, to receive care at home close to hospital care.

Oxygen concentrator is also called a home type oxygen machine that provides pure oxygen to the patient using it by separating the air in the environment. Generally, oxygen deficiency in COPD patients causes damage to kidney and heart organs. Thanks to the home-type oxygen machine, the body is given the oxygen it needs and it is tried to prevent damage to the organs. In addition to being an electrical device, there are also battery-powered ones. Home type oxygen machine is used by prescription under the supervision of a doctor.

How to Use a Home Oxygen Machine?

A household oxygen machine first purifies the air in the environment by passing it through a filter. Oxygen in the air is separated by passing through a special unit called the column set. At the end of this process, pure oxygen is obtained. In this way, the patient realizes a more intense oxygen intake.

There are humidifier units inside the device and these units work with the help of water. Water renewal should be done before reaching the minimum chart. It is important that the water used here is purified. Nasal cannulas allow the patient to breathe purified and humidified oxygen. The clamping apparatus should be adjusted according to the patient. The device, which is operated after the nasal cannula is inserted, becomes ready for inhalation after the appropriate oxygen amount is adjusted. Oxygen machine usage time is determined by the doctor and is a process that needs attention.

What Should Be Considered When Using a Home Type Oxygen Machine?

  • The cleaning of the oxygen machine is one of the important points. Filter cleaning and maintenance is of great importance.

  • Since it is a machine that produces pure oxygen, it should be kept away from flammable and explosive materials.

  • In order to keep the machine in cool and airy environments and to prevent its heating, it should be operated in a place away from places close to the walls and heater cores.

  • It is important that the water in the water tank placed in the machine does not fall below the minimum level. Decreased water may cause coughing due to dryness in the patient’s respiratory tract.

  • Humidification cups should be removed when the machine is not in use and when the machine is being transported. This is a precaution taken to prevent water from spilling and damaging the device during humidification.

  • Although the machine is designed for continuous operation, the device should be turned off, maintained and rested at regular intervals. This process should be on the advice of a doctor.

  • In case of malfunction of the household oxygen device, the technical service should be contacted immediately.
